ideas about digital journalism

Saturday, August 4th, 2012

hello. it’s tom moore. i’m a journalism professor at york college cuny in jamaica, queens in new york city.

i thought i would start discussing some ideas about digital journalism… telling news stories on the web. one of the goals here is to dig out ideas about how reporters are using the web to tell stories of all kinds. i want to look at the best ways to prepare undergrad journalism students for careers where reporters have to tell do their stories on various platforms: print, photos, video, audio as well as using data, maps and graphs… all on the web.

this is what i tell people: in the news business for a while now – it all goes in the same bucket. cnn has to do print stories to go along with their TV news stories… and the NYT has to do audio and TV news reports… you get the picture. it all has to go into the same place: the news organization’s website.

here’s one more idea to introduce before we move into who’s doing what on the web. our journalism program at york college cuny is growing so fast – even though salaried jobs with benefits are hard to get…

why is our program growing? my theory: journalism is an internet major. that makes it popular… if you want to study the web you could major in marketing… or something like york’s program called communications technology…

there are other majors that are web oriented but you get the picture. “internet related majors are hot. journalism is one of them.” tom moore said that.
